What can evidence tell us about life in the factories?
A source sheet and exercises which encourage students to ask 'useful for what?' when exploring the issue of utility in history. Evidence is included from a range of sources; Edward Baines' History of the Cotton Manufacture (1835), interviews from Michael Sadler's parliamentary committee and William Dood's A Narrative of a Factory Cripple (1841), among others. A task sheet encourages students to take each source and decide what it tells them in relation to a range of questions.
