This is an activity for KS4 students to develop their understanding of causation, focusing on Germany 1890-1945. A passage from EH Carr's 'What is History?' is used to help draw out different kinds of factors in history - underlying, influential, 'watershed' and 'trigger' factors are explained. Teaching notes explain how to put the tasks into action. It could be adapted for other topics and age groups.
